101 Dalmatians 2 : Patch's London Adventure (2003) Available Formats: |
Patch, the TV-obsessed pup of the 1961 animated original, becomes a star in this sequel when he sneaks off to audition for his favorite show, Thunderbolt. Meanwhile, the ego-driven canine star (voiced by Spin City's Barry Bostwick) learns that his character is about to be killed off. His solution? Be a real-life hero. Patch, with his encyclopedic knowledge of Thunderbolt episodes, prowls the streets of London with his idol, making disastrous attempts to rescue unsuspecting citizens. Cruella De Vil returns, on probation for her earlier misdeeds, but still determined to steal the puppies. She springs old cohorts Horace and Jasper from jail and adds artist Lars (Martin Short) to her arsenal. What results is a blend of the animated original's coziness with the live-action version's slapstick, wrapped up with a high-minded ending in which Patch teaches his hero what it means to be genuinely heroic.

Atlantis II - Milo's Return (2003) Available Formats: |
Like Disney's animated Atlantis: The Lost Empire, its sequel, Milo's Return, is an Indiana Jones for the younger set. Bespectacled Milo Thatch (James Arnold Taylor taking over from Michael J. Fox) is back in this made-for-video release, helping to rebuild Atlantis alongside new sweetheart Queen Kida, but all is not so calm in the outside world. A giant octopus-like creature, the Kraken, is terrorizing a local village, so Milo, Kida, and the rest head out--Scoobie-style--to make things right. Once that problem has been solved, they're off to the Southwest to tame a passel of wild sand coyotes and then to Antarctica to battle a 100-foot ice monster. Milo's Return is a series of loosely linked adventures drawing on a variety of mythologies, including Native American and Norse, that doesn't always have much to do with the original movie, but is always lively and entertaining.

This straight-to-video animated story is set in the Beast's castle which, as viewers know from the original Beauty and the Beast film, is under a spell until the Beast can learn to love. Starting with this familiar premise, Belle's Magical World plummets into three disjointed episodes surrounding Belle's life as a captive in the castle. In "The Perfect World," a misunderstanding of words erupts between Belle and Beast, made worse by a feigned apology. Fifi and Lumiere take the spotlight in "Fifi's Folly," when a romantic evening together becomes a chilling adventure inside a runaway sleigh. In "The Broken Wing," Belle entreats the Beast to act kindly toward a tiny songbird.

The enchantment of Disney's Academy Award®-winning film Beauty and the Beast continues as Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) happily casts its song-filled spell. This irresistible tale that "recaptures the magic and charm of the original" (Neil Rosen, New York 1) reveals a Christmas past when Belle does her best to warm the Beast's castle with the spirit and hope of the season -- despite the Beast's disdain of the holidays. Belle asks the castle's Enchanted Objects to join the celebration, including stubborn Angelique -- a delicate tree ornament who was once the castle decorator. But can Belle, Cogsworth, Lumiere, and their friends undo the plans of Forte, the pompous pipe organ who hates happy celebrations and tries to keep the Beast apart from Belle's special holiday gift? Newly remastered for sparkling sights and sound, and reuniting everybody's favorite voice cast from the original feature, Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) overflows with five spectacular songs, spellbinding visuals, and the same delightful charms that brought Disney's original masterpiece to the screen. Beauty and the Beast : Belle's Tales of Friendship (1999) Available Formats: |
Belle's Tales of Friendship is a made-for-video treat that finds an innovative outlet for Disney entertainment old and new. Although the cover is of the animated Belle from Beauty and the Beast, this program's star is Lynsey McLeod as a live-action Belle. À la Barney, she invites grade-school kids to come into her bookshop to listen to tales, play games, and learn simple lessons. Her stories come in the form of classic Disney cartoons, which rarely have a good showcase these days. Belle supplies narration for the circa 1950s animated shorts of "Hansel & Gretel," "The Three Little Pigs," and "Morris the Midget Moose." This video's highlight is "Mrs. Potts' Party," a never-before-seen segment that was made for Beauty and the Beast: An Enchanted Christmas but never used. It works as a wonderful short, albeit for only 10 of the video's 70 minutes.

Brother Bear 2 (2006) Available Formats: |
We're back in an all-new movie, eh? Beauty. And not just us moose, but the large bear (that's Kenai) and his little brother bear (that's Koda) and also this new girl named Nita. She's a handful, eh? Nita knew Large Bear way back when he wasn't a bear. That was in the first movie, remember? Anyway, they thought they were gonna be together forever even though they get along like two angry beavers in a mud hut. Okay, so now the Great Spirits say they have to go on a great big, exciting journey to break the pact. So don't trample off. Join me and my brother -- oh, and there's a couple fetching moosettes in this story too -– for all sorts of laughs and wild adventure. (See what I did. I used the word "wild" 'cause we're out in the woods.) Beauty. It's gonna be tons of fun for the whole family, eh?
The bonds of true friendship and love are powerful enough to persist through even the most extreme circumstances, but can even the strongest bond endure when a young man and a young woman are split apart by the spirits? Since being turned into a bear as punishment for his insensitivity in Brother Bear, Kenai has managed to find true happiness and a compelling sense of purpose in his new relationship with his adopted brother Koda. But when Kenai's old friend Nita prepares for her wedding day with another man, the spirits send a sign indicating that a strong connection still exists between Kenai and Nita. The tribe Shaman suggests that the two join forces in a ritual to sever the bond between them and Nita, newly endowed with the ability to communicate with animals, seeks out Kenai in the woods. Even as the two friends resolutely journey to break the connection between them, the inescapable bond between them strengthens and threatens to disrupt not only Nita's upcoming marriage, but the special relationship between Kenai and Koda. In the end, destiny may require that each of the three choose between his or her happiness and the happiness of the other two. Like its predecessor Brother Bear, Brother Bear 2 features lush animation; a nice blend of action, suspense, and comedy; and a powerful message.

Cinderella II : Dreams Come True (2002) Available Formats: |
The magical story of Cinderella continues in an all-new full-length movie brimming with irresistible music, lush animation, and all your favorite characters from the original Disney classic. When Cinderella and her prince return to the palace from their honeymoon, the new princess suddenly finds herself cast in the role of Royal Hostess. But the traditional rules of the Royal Court don't allow her to entertain in her own warm and wonderful way. With the help of everyone's favorite Fairy Godmother and a band of mischievous mice, Cinderella and her friends find that the only true way to succeed is to be yourself. You'll find dreams really do come true in the enchanting tale of Cinderella II: Dreams Come True.
Disney continues to "sequelize" its classic features. With smart foresight, the filmmakers choose to go with three snappy short films to comprise this 73-minute feature with the Fairy Godmother granting wishes to various characters. In the opening short, Cinderella must pursue life as queen. Several feathers are ruffled as she brings her down-home ways to the castle (bring the commoners in and open those darn curtains). In the other tales, one of Cinderella's animal pals receives a chance to see the world quite differently, and finally, Anastasia, Cinderella's formerly evil stepsister, finds love with a little help. As with the other sequels, the look of the film helps bridge the distance between the original and the sequel (here over 50 years) and it comes together seamlessly. Little ones from ages 4 to 9 should be entertained while purists may be a bit aghast.
Cinderella III : A Twist in Time (2007) Available Formats: |

The Fox and the Hound 2 (2006) Available Formats: | Get ready to go a little bit country with Disney's all-new motion picture The Fox and the Hound 2. The music of today's hottest stars is center stage in this classic tale of friendship and loyalty. Tod and Copper still go together like an itch and a scratch, but when Copper gets a shot at the big time with a nutty group of hound dog howlers, their purebred friendship is put to the test. Experience an irresistible adventure featuring the stellar voice talent of Reba McEntire, Patrick Swayze, and Jeff Foxworthy and bursting with original music by Trisha Yearwood, Lucas Grabeel, and many more. The Fox and the Hound 2 combines music and comedy in perfect harmony.
Hercules: Zero to Hero (1998) Available Formats: |
This 70-minute feature is made up of three TV segments from Disney's popular Hercules series. The video, like the show, follows the daffy adventures of Hercules as a teenager, when his strength is amazing but his control is not. For kids who have not seen the cable TV series, this will be a worthwhile video. Like most of Disney's spinoffs, the animation is solid, the music is hip, and many key members of the original vocal pool (including Tate Donavan as the hero) return. Unfortunately, as with most episodic TV, the stories can be pretty uninspired. The best segment here is the finale, which has James Woods returning as Hades with another plan to topple Zeus (Rip Torn). The wraparound story of Meg finding out her rippling love's past is new but hardly constitutes the bulk of the video. The three segments are "Hercules and the First Day of School," "Hercules and the Grim Avenger," and "Hercules and the Visit from Zeus."

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) Available Formats: |
Return to the magnificence of Notre Dame in Disney's all-new movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, a fun, romantic adventure told with vibrant animation and music as soaring as its setting. Still the faithful protector of Notre Dame's beloved bells, Quasimodo now rings them with the help of Esmeralda and Phoebus's little boy, Zephyr, who is Quasi's best friend. Stopping with Zephyr at a traveling circus owned by the evil magician Sarousch, Quasi is captivated by Sarousch's lovely assistant, Madellaine. But greedy Sarousch is plotting to steal the Cathedral's most famous bell -- with Madellaine's unwilling help. Encouraged by some laughably misguided advice from his gargoyle pals, Quasi listens to his own heart -- and discovers that he, too, must look past appearances to find true love. It's "smart, funny, and packed with lessons about humanity for the whole family," raves Jim Brosseau of "Ladies' Home Journal." All of the original voice talent reprise their roles, including Demi Moore as Esmeralda, Tom Hulce as Quasimodo, and Kevin Kline as Phoebus. Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as Madellaine and Haley Joel Osment brings Zephyr to life in this magical, musical celebration of the beauty inside everyone.
Most of the original characters from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame--plus a few new ones--return for this animated sequel. Esmeralda (Demi Moore) and Phoebus (Kevin Kline) now have a son named Zephyr (Haley Joel Osment), with whom Quasi (Tom Hulce) has become friends. When the circus comes to town, the hunchback becomes enchanted by a magician's assistant, Madellaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt), but the her boss, the vain Sarousch (Michael McKean), is also a thief with an eye for the cathedral's jeweled bell. He forces Madellaine to woo Quasi while he carries out the theft. Will he get away with it? Will Madellaine learn to see the inner Quasi? And will he be able to trust again when he learns of her deception? Songs and humorous high jinks from the gargoyles, including Jason Alexander's Hugo, illustrate the lesson that--as in the first feature--you can't judge a book by its cover. This sequel is squarely aimed at a younger audience than the original was; children from 5 to 10 should be very entertained.
The Jungle Book 2 (2003) Available Formats: |
After a delightful opening, in which jungle boy Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) recaps much of the original Jungle Book in a sprightly shadow puppet show, The Jungle Book 2 swiftly turns into a carbon copy of the splendidly swinging previous movie. After his old pal Baloo the bear (voiced by John Goodman) draws Mowgli away from the man-village, with all its work and rules, and back into the glorious indolence of the jungle, the movie repeats--in a less energetic form--an encounter with Kaa the snake, the cockney vultures, a musical number at the monkey's palace, the menace of Shere Khan the tiger, and even the song "The Bare Necessities." The only difference is that there's a girl named Shanti along for the ride; sadly, her character is so bland that it doesn't do much to justify the movie's existence.

Leroy & Stitch (2006) Available Formats: |
Here comes trouble! The adventure never stops as Lilo and Stitch face the challenge of their lives in Disney's hilarious, all-new movie Leroy & Stitch. As a reward for rounding up all 625 experiments, Lilo, Stitch, Jumba, and Pleakley have been placed around the galaxy in a spot where each of them thinks they truly belong. Their lives are all shook up when the dastardly Dr. Hamsterviel breaks out of prison and forces Jumba to create a new experiment -- Leroy, the evil twin of Stitch. To make matters worse, Hamsterviel soon clones the nasty little creature to form his own mischievous army. Now it's up to Lilo to gather Stitch and the rest of the gang from the far corners of outer space to battle the legion of Leroys. When the going gets rough, our friends discover that one place they all truly belong is together.
The Hawaiian word ohana means family, but encompasses both immediate family and individuals that play an integral part in one's happiness and sense of well being. When Lilo says aloha (goodbye) to her good friends Stitch, Jumba and Pleakly after they've successfully completed their mission on earth, Lilo finds herself back on earth feeling lonely and bemoaning the difficulty of holding true to an aloha spirit that demands saying goodbye to one's "family" members. Surprisingly, Stitch, Jumba and Pleakly also find themselves feeling strangely disconnected and alone even though they are finally in places in the galaxy where they truly belong. After Gantu helps Dr. Hamsterviel break out of prison, Dr. Hamsterviel prevails upon Jumba to create an experimental evil twin of Stitch called Leroy. When the newly appointed Captain Stitch is called upon to defeat an army of 600 Leroy clones, a bizarre twist reunites him with Jumba and Pleakly and the trio once again faces seemingly insurmountable odds. Can their efforts, combined with those of Lilo and Reuben, the sandwich-making experiment 625, possibly prevail against Gantu's evil experimental army? This Disney Channel Premiere Presentation reunites the lovable Lilo and Stitch gang in another compelling story that reaffirms the aloha spirit and the importance of ohana. DVD extras include a never-before-seen episode from the Lilo and Stitch television series and an interactive flight simulator game.

The Lion King 2 : Simba's Pride (1998) Available Formats: |
Another made-for-video sequel to a Disney masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels, most of the recognizable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love.
This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European theaters. For kids, the sequel will be a favorite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby," was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, "He Lives in You," was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience. All the power and majesty of The Lion King return in this final volume of The Lion King trilogy! This Special Edition features an all-new vibrant picture presentation from the digital master. Meet Kiara, Simba's headstrong daughter and heir to the Pride Lands. While on the prowl for adventure, she encounters the mischievous Kovu, a young member of the banished Outland Pride chosen to walk in Scar's paw prints. As they seek their proper places in the "Circle Of Life," Kiara and Kovu find that they may be the only hope for healing the rift between their prides! The Lion King 2 : Simba's Pride Special Edition includes original cast members, stunning Disney animation, and six spectacular songs. Peter Pan: Return to Never Land (2002) Available Formats: |
Unlike Disney's other sequels to their classic films, this follow-up to the 1953 version of Peter Pan debuted in theaters. World War II has turned Wendy's preteen daughter, Jane, into a realist, a girl who insists there's no need for stories and fun while London is crumbling. Hook kidnaps Jane (thinking she's Wendy) and returns to "the second star to the right" to foil Pan. Alas, the film doesn't build on this new story line (the London scenes have the most emotional impact), and what follows is a thin reworking of the original. On the plus side, a clever octopus takes over from that old crocodile, and Jane turns out to be a solid--and modern--role model. Those from ages 4 to 9 who have been brought up on the original should enjoy these adventures, even if the story, like Peter himself, "hasn't grown up." The 72-minute film is shown with the delightful 1948 short "Pluto's Fledgling."

Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998) Available Formats: |
Disney's direct-to-video sequel to their 1995 hit places Pocahontas in harm's way in London, where she is almost tossed into jail and has some other mishaps. She's not alone, however: a cute raccoon named Meeko does a nice job as the obligatory funny animal. The songs are about as memorable as those in the first film, but the art and animation maintain far higher standards than most animated sequels dumped onto tape. If you don't drive yourself nuts thinking about the appalling historical revisionism at work here, this is passable family entertainment.

Tarzan II (2005) Available Formats: |
Whereas the original Tarzan tells the story of a man raised by gorillas who learns to bring together the human and animal worlds, Tarzan II is a prequel, of sorts, focusing on a chapter from Tarzan’s childhood where he realizes he is not an ape and sets out to discover his true identity. The young misfit runs away from his loving mother, Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), and wanders up the Dark Mountain to come face to face with the monstrous Zugor. But all is not serious in this 72-minute boondoggle; there is Disney’s usual foray into frivolity by way of a few wisecracking sidekicks--a couple of gorilla brothers named Uto and Kago, and their nettlesome Mama Gunda (voiced by Estelle Harris, a laudable choice).
Experience the beginning of the legend with Disney's TARZAN II, a hilarious, all-new, animated motion picture loaded with laughs, irresistible new songs by Phil Collins, and the inspired voice talent of Glenn Close, George Carlin, and Emmy Award winner Brad Garrett. Before he was King of the Jungle, Tarzan was an awkward young kid just trying to fit in. When one of his missteps puts his family in jeopardy, Tarzan decides they would be better off without him. His thrilling new journey brings him face to face with the mysterious Zugor, the most powerful force in the land. Together, Tarzan and Zugor discover that being different is not a weakness and that friends and family are the greatest strength of all. This action-paced adventure is sure to delight the entire family. Get ready to Go Ape over Disney's wild, new Tarzan II.
Tarzan & Jane (2002) Available Formats: |
The couple's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss is approaching and Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate--necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbor Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her--and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honors as the voices of Tarzan and Jane, and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs.
