The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

(The Friendship Edition)

Available Formats:
The Friendship Edition DVD, 25th Anniversary DVD and VHS

Disney's 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh, penned in the 1920s by British storyteller A.A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney's original vision to develop the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a collection of the original Pooh shorts, "The Honey Tree," "The Blustery Day," and "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too." These storybooks are presented in seamless "chapters," narrated by the timeless Sebastian Cabot. The familiar musical score and original voices of Sterling Holloway as Pooh, and Paul Winchell as Tigger, cap this enchanting keepsake.

Winnie the Pooh - Seasons of Giving

Format: DVD or VHS
Three marvelous cold-weather stories from Disney's popular Pooh television series are combined into one video. A slight error in judgment has led the gang in the 100 Acre Wood into spring in "Groundpiglet Day." Rabbit's rushing about defeats the true purpose of the holidays in "A Winnie the Pooh Thanksgiving." Rabbit is also the center of "Find Her, Keep Her" when he adopts a wayward bird. Even though this is a new collection of cartoons, the 70-minute tape keeps closely to the spirit of the '60s Pooh classics (unlike previous Pooh cartoons). A new song from Disney songmasters the Sherman brothers is sung (along with their famous title number), and Paul Winchell returns as the unmistakable voice of Tigger. That's not the late Sterling Holloway voicing Pooh, but a remarkable impersonation by ace mimic Jim Cummings.

Winnie the Pooh - Un-Valentine's Day & A Valentine for You

Available Formats:
DVD

Un-Valentine's Day: It's the time of year when Pooh and his pals like to show how much they care. But Rabbit insists they cancel Valnetine's Day because of the flood of cards that littered the Hundred Acre Wood last year! Reluctantly, everyone agrees, until someone anonymously sends Pooh a pot of honey.

A Valentine for You: The dreaded day has finally come: Christopher Robin has been bitten by a smitten (that's a member of the love-bug family)! What can a silly ol' bear do to cure his best friend? Winnie the Pooh and friends Piglet, Rabbit, Eeyore, Owl, and Tigger set off deep into the darkest parts of the Hundred Acre Wood in search of a smitten to bite Christopher Robin and cancel out the effects of the initial bite. Pooh and his friends get separated in the woods and are reunited by the glow of a love bug. When it comes time to release the captured bug and cure Christopher Robin, Pooh has second thoughts--Christopher Robin seems so happy that it seems wrong for Pooh to want things any other way. Pooh returns home on this saddest, happiest Valentine's Day to find a valentine from Christopher Robin awaiting him. It seems that there is always a special place in the heart for old friends, even when new friends come along. "While the seasons change, some things remain the same."

The Book of Pooh - Stories From the Heart (2001)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

While Disney didn't invent Winnie the Pooh, nor first animate him, it certainly has Americanized the British bear into a cartoon character hardly resembling A.A. Milne's original 1924 creation. Although Disney's four Storybook Classics titles (from 1966) were somewhat faithful to Milne's concept, subsequent titles (especially in the Playtime and Learning series) descended into second-rate TV fare. All this to say that Disney has redeemed itself with The Book of Pooh, a fresh batch of Pooh stories evoking a nostalgic nod to the original. The Disney Channel's full-length film Stories from the Heart is a puppet rendition of Pooh, set in a sparkling world of computer animation (not unlike Bear in the Big Blue House, which shares the same executive producer and director, Mitchell Kriegman). The puppets (by Shadow Projects) may take some getting used to by viewers accustomed to animated cartoons, yet they'll appreciate the characters' lifelike personalities. The 77-minute program is a collection of six tales focusing on Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and the gang (though Kanga and Roo are noticeably absent). Mark Zaslove deserves writing kudos for subtle humor (reminiscent of Milne) and storytelling restraint uncharacteristic of Disney. Highlights include "Eeyore's Tailiversary," in which Eeyore receives a surprise party to celebrate the day he and his tail became attached, and "Tigger's Replacement," which chronicles Tigger's attempts to teach Piglet how to be a Tigger. (Lessons in bouncing and Tiggerisms are part of his Rigorous Tiggerous Training Program.) Many of the puppets' voices are familiar, such as Jim Cummings (The Tigger Movie) as Pooh and Tigger. Six musical numbers round out this welcome entry in Disney's Winnie the Pooh collection.

The Book of Pooh - Fun With Words (2001)

Available Format:
VHS

Where do words go when they are not spoken? Such elegant Pooh ponderings are what make Book of Pooh vintage A.A. Milne, though it is not Milne at all but Disney's nostalgic nod to the classic British characters of the Hundred Acre Wood. Fun with Words is equally as magical as its predecessor, Stories from the Heart, featuring lifelike puppetry in a sparkling setting (reminiscent of Bear in the Big Blue House, which shares the same executive producer, Mitchell Kriegman). Though the title suggests a grammar lesson, there are no alphabet exercises or word games here. Rather, four heart-warming episodes delve into the amusing mysteries of speech from the perspective of Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and the gang. In one tale, "The Words Are Out," Piglet's case of laryngitis is of great concern to Pooh who believes Piglet's words have either run away or are simply stuck inside of Piglet. In another story, Owl believes Eeyore has a "Brain Drain" when he momentarily forgets how to voice his thoughts. And laughter is the theme of "Isn't That Funny," when Tigger tries on various laughing styles to see which suits him best. A dozen musical numbers cap the 88-minute program.

The Book of Pooh - A Valentine for Eeyore (2001)

Available Format:
VHS

Endearing Eeyore takes center stage in this compilation of four heartwarming tales focusing on friendship and Valentine's Day. This Book of Pooh entry, with its lifelike puppetry and computer-animated set, is Disney's commendable salute to A.A. Milne's Hundred Acre Wood stories. Rather than the frenzied cartoons of the Playtime series, these stories are gently paced and self-deprecating, with subtle humor reminiscent of the British author's original characters. "Mr. Narrator," for example, describes a day in the life of Pooh and pals when nothing happens at all. Faced with the problematic notion of an "unstory," they ask the narrator to invent one, with comical results. In the program's title segment, everyone receives a Valentine except Eeyore, so Piglet attempts to remedy the oversight with surprises for all. "Beastly Burden" has Eeyore pondering his existence. If Tiggers bounce and Pooh-Bears eat honey, what do Eeyores do best? The answer comes from an unlikely source and is as delightful as the six original songs interspersing the 45- minute program.

The Book of Pooh - Just Say Boo (2001)

Available Format:
VHS

For those who found the animated Pooh video series a disappointment compared to the original Disney featurettes (compiled in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), The Book of Pooh may revive interest. Its puppetry gives child viewers the delightful impression that their stuffed toys have come to life. Although this new Disney Channel series still offers more lesson-oriented storytelling than the whimsy of the A.A. Milne-based originals, it has its own charm. This 46-minute offering contains three fright-oriented stories with Halloween in mind. The first--a double-length episode--focuses on Eeyore's move to the Scary Woods while the rest of the gang dreams up creepy costumes to win the contest at Kanga's holiday party. Piglet finds a black hat he thinks makes him brave, and Tigger, Piglet, and Rabbit get spooked housesitting for Owl in the other two stories.

Winnie the Pooh - A Very Merry Pooh Year (2002)

Available Formats:
DVD, VHS, or Spanish VHS

Pooh Bear and his pals in the Hundred Acre Wood celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve in a pair of adventures folded into this 65-minute made-for-video feature. In the first, the silly old bear plays Saint Nick to his buddies ("I always thought he'd be taller") after failing to get an errant wish list off to Santa, while identity crisis strikes the gang in the second half. Piglet inherits Tigger's hop and jumps like a pogo stick, and Eeyore (dressed in Pooh's shirt) becomes a happy-go-lucky honey lover. Welcome to The Twilight Zone according to Winnie the Pooh. There's not much A.A. Milne in this TV-style holiday special, but it's a bouncy little production that should entertain the wee ones with its warm fuzzies, good company, slapstick energy, and life lessons.

Winnie the Pooh - Frankenpooh/Spookable Pooh (1995)

Available Formats:
DVD or VHS

Frankenpooh
A spooky theme runs through several stories in this collection. "The Monster Frankenpooh" finds Dr. Von Tigger turning Pooh into a somewhat familiar-looking, scary creature. "Things That Go Piglet in the Night" features the characters on a ghost chase, and "Pooh Moon" finds Pooh and Piglet searching for honey while everyone else assumes they're missing--not just missing, but taken by the Grabme Gotcha. Charming visuals, terrific characters, touching stories. A winner.

Spookable Pooh
It's a rainy day, and Pooh and his friends are spending it in Christopher Robin's attic. Two stories from the delightful animated series follow: "A Knight to Remember," which finds the timid Piglet transported to a magical kingdom, where he fights a dreadful dragon, and "Rock-a-Bye Pooh Bear," in which Piglet has a nightmare and is afraid to go back to sleep. That leaves it up to Pooh, Rabbit, and Tigger to show how bad dreams don't have to come true. As always in the Pooh series, the animation is better than average for TV/video (and even charmingly quaint), and the characters are great fun to be with.

Disney's Winnie the Pooh : Sing a Song With Pooh Bear and Piglet Too

Available Formats:
DVD or VHS

Although it's part of Disney's popular Sing Along series (lyrics appear on the screen), this video plays like another episode of Pooh, and that's good news. Pooh wakes one morning and wonders why he doesn't have his own song (I guess the theme song doesn't count). He visits his friends, accompanied by 45 nonstop minutes of song. The new video contains only five of the "classic" Pooh songs; most of the songs come from Pooh's later adventures.

Pooh Learning: Growing Up (1988)

Available Format:
VHS

There are two animated films in this video, which address the themes of growing up. In the first, Christopher Robin learns to take responsibility for his mistakes when he breaks a bust of his great grandfather while the animals are helping him clean his room. At first, he attempts to hide in his friends' houses, but he can't fit in any of them. Then he runs away with Pooh. But after a good talk with Eeyore, who explains that "everybody makes mistakes, we just have to face up to them," he decides to go home. This film shows the importance of friendship, as well as being honest and responsible--both good lessons for young children. More mystifying is the second feature in this video, which opens as Christopher Robin gets dressed up for a big party because "girls will be there". His animal friends, upset by this development, fear Christopher may leave them forever for the grown-up world. They build a grown-up house for him and even recruit a girlfriend in the person of a scarecrow. For any lover of the classic children's books, the thought of Pooh and Christopher Robin thinking about dating is strange, and most small children wouldn't have it on their minds, either. At this age, "growing up" should be more about developing social skills than finding a date. Also, the idea that an inanimate scarecrow is an acceptable substitute for a real companion is not a positive message for either girls or boys to receive.

And in "Easy Come, Easy Gopher," building the ultimate tunnel is no easy task when Rabbit secretly changes the blueprints!

Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore (1973)

Available Format:
VHS

It's a regular roly-poly day in the 100 Acre Woods. Pooh and friends are playing games at the river when Eeyore comes into view, bemused as usual. Pooh notices Eeyore is even bluer today, and when he discovers everyone has forgotten Eeyore's birthday, Pooh springs (a relative term) into action. This 25-minute short was made to look like other Pooh classics (including The Blustery Day, The Honey Tree, and Tigger Too), using the same opening inside Christopher Robin's home (with a scratchy and grainy film stock to boot), but this segment was made in 1983, nine years after Tigger. The main difference: some unmistakable voices are gone, along with some of the magic. But for those who love Pooh, the short is a natural to pick up.

Winnie the Pooh: Pooh Wishes (1988)

Available Format:
VHS

No childhood is complete without a little magic and Pooh Wishes delightfully delivers it. In The Wishing Bear, the centerpiece of a trio of tales, Pooh learns to wish upon a star, but then struggles to recall the offbeat rhyme. His journey to remember, coupled with his driving need to make sure his friend's wishes come true, is heartachingly sweet. Friendship is also the underlying theme in two other adventures. In Goodbye Mr. Pooh, a surprise party makes the bear think his friends want him to move away, while Balloonatics uses a balloon--another staple of childhood--to show that friends stick together no matter what. It all adds up to three rewarding fables of friendship in three-quarters of an hour.

Three Cheers for Eeyore & Rabbit (1988)

Available Format:
VHS

Two of Winnie the Pooh's sidekicks take center stage in these four tales about friendship. Eeyore of the slow-mo, downcast voice gives heart to "Eeyi, Eeyi, Eeyore", which shows him nurturing a plant by singing to it and, amazingly, making what appeared to be a worthless seed grow. "Just had to let them know there was a friend up here," he drawls. "The New Eeyore" drives home the point that you've just got to be you as the donkey impersonates Tigger in a misguided quest for popularity. Silliness reigns in "Honey for a Bunny", while "Rabbit Takes a Holiday" gently pokes fun at Rabbit's neatnik, homebody nature. For good measure, sprinkled throughout is a generous dollop of Pooh-isms, such as "I believe I may have misremembered what Rabbit may have told me." Come again? That's the idea.

Pooh Party (1988)

Available Format:
VHS

Rabbit has a party in "Party Poohper," but the rest of the gang is tied up trying to save bunnies from danger. (Poor Rabbit, rather touchingly, holds the party festivities anyway with stitched-together doll versions of his absent friends.) In "Pooh Day Afternoon," Christopher Robin asks Pooh to be his assistant dog sitter, a serious job that the old bear might not be up to. Good stuff, pleasing animation that moves well, strong characters with real feelings often expressed movingly, and plenty of humor.

Winnie the Pooh - Frankenpooh (1988)

A spooky theme runs through several stories on this video. A winner.

Winnie the Pooh - Spookable Pooh (1996)

Available Format:
VHS

It's a rainy day, and Pooh and his friends are spending it in Christopher Robin's attic. Two stories from the delightful animated series follow: "A Knight to Remember" finds the timid Piglet transported to a magical kingdom, where he fights a dreadful dragon, and "Rock-a-Bye Pooh Bear," in which Piglet has a nightmare and is afraid to go back to sleep. That leaves it up to Pooh, Rabbit, and Tigger to show how bad dreams don't have to come true. As always in the Pooh series, the animation is better-than-average for TV/video (and even charmingly quaint), and the characters are great fun to be with.

Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day - Learn to Read Edition (1968)

Available Format:
VHS

The Disney animated films of any given period all seem to be cut from one big piece of the same brightly colored cloth. Whatever their sources, they have all been seamlessly Disneyized. The Winnie the Pooh shorts are typical products of the Wolfgang Reitherman period of the '60s and '70s, supervised by the animation director responsible for The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book. It's jaunty, tuneful stuff, but produced on the cheap, crude, and sketchy-looking in comparison with recent peak achievements of Disney craftsmanship such as Mulan. This second installment (1968) takes off from one of the most stirring episodes in the second of A.A. Milne's books of stories about Christopher Robin and the Hundred Acre Woods crew, "The House at Pooh Corner," in which the wood weathers a storm and even a flood, and the animal chums learn to pull together in an emergency. Think of it as a disaster movie for the preschool crowd.

Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too (1974)

Available Format:
VHS

This third installment of the Disney Pooh series, first released in 1974, is perhaps the liveliest, in part because the hyperactively bouncy stuffed tiger of the title seems tailor-made for animation. The story line, in which Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and company have to come to terms with the disruptive new presence in the Hundred Acre Wood, could almost be described as morally uplifting. And the character's theme song, "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers," is the only really memorable number in the entire series; your kid will be singing it for days. The throaty tones of Paul Winchell, as Tigger, are a definite asset--and voice choices are by no means a neutral issue. When Disney chose the familiar tenor of in-house voiceover performer Sterling Holloway for the title character, it was a good example of what the politically minded call an "appropriative" gesture: a way of enveloping A.A. Milne's great children's book hero, of transforming him instantly into a generic Disney character. (You would never guess from the Disney renditions of Christopher that in the books, originally published in the 1920s, everybody was British.) The marketing machinations came full circle when Disney purchased rights to the original drawings by illustrator Ernest Shephard; merchandise depicting the two versions of the characters are now sold side by side in The Disney Store, like so many cans of New and Classic Coke.

Winnie the Pooh Storybook Classics (2000)

Available Format:
VHS

Four Winnie the Pooh shorts are repackaged into one set: Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), the Oscar-winning Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1968), Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too! (1974), and Winnie the Pooh and a Day For Eeyore (1983). The first three were strung together in 1997 as the popular film The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The merits of these adaptations of A.A. Milne's classic tales are up to debate, but the impact that these shorts--especially the first Two--had on kids and parents in America is not. Winnie (the Disney version, anyway) became an icon for millions of kids and parents. The vocal talent is exceptional, including Sterling Holloway's Pooh, Paul Winchell's Tigger, and Ralph Wright's Eeyore (Wright also penned the adaptations). The two later stories lost some of the voices and some of the magic, but Pooh fans will enjoy these tales, which had varying degrees of success but share the same distinctive pedigree.
